Periodontitis

Periodontitis

Periodontitis is a serious gum disease that can lead to tooth loss if not treated promptly. In diabetic patients, high blood sugar levels reduce the body’s ability to fight bacterial infections and slow down the healing process. The infection starts with gum inflammation (gingivitis) and gradually affects deeper structures, including bone and connective tissue.
Symptoms include swollen, red, and bleeding gums, persistent bad breath, loose teeth, and gum recession. If left untreated, periodontitis can destroy the bone supporting your teeth, leading to eventual tooth loss. Maintaining good oral hygiene, controlling diabetes through medication and diet, and getting professional deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) are crucial to managing this condition effectively.
