Gingivitis
Gingivitis is a mild but early stage of gum disease characterized by inflammation, redness, and bleeding gums, especially while brushing or flossing. In diabetes, high blood sugar levels promote bacterial growth and make it harder for the body to fight infections, making gums more vulnerable. Poor oral hygiene, plaque buildup, and reduced saliva flow further worsen the condition.
If left untreated, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis — a more severe form of gum disease that damages the supporting structures of the teeth. However, with early detection and proper care, gingivitis is completely reversible. Managing blood sugar levels, maintaining consistent oral hygiene, and scheduling regular dental cleanings can restore gum health and prevent further complications.
