Calculus (Tartar Buildup)
Calculus, also known as tartar, develops when dental plaque hardens due to mineral deposits from saliva. For diabetic patients, poor glycemic control can increase plaque accumulation, and reduced saliva flow further accelerates the hardening process. Once tartar forms, it cannot be removed by regular brushing and requires professional cleaning.
Tartar buildup can irritate gums, cause inflammation, and serve as a breeding ground for bacteria that lead to gum disease. It often appears as yellowish or brownish deposits near the gum line and contributes to persistent bad breath. To prevent calculus formation, maintain proper brushing and flossing habits, follow a diabetes-friendly diet, and visit your dentist regularly for professional scaling and oral hygiene maintenance.
