Caries (Tooth Decay)

Caries (Tooth Decay)

Tooth decay or dental caries is one of the most common oral problems associated with diabetes. When blood sugar levels remain high, more glucose circulates in saliva, creating a favorable environment for bacteria to grow. These bacteria feed on sugars and produce acids that erode the enamel — the outermost protective layer of teeth.
Over time, this leads to the formation of cavities, pain, and even tooth loss. Diabetic patients are also more prone to dry mouth, which reduces saliva’s natural ability to wash away food particles and neutralize acids. Regular dental check-ups, fluoride treatments, proper brushing with fluoride toothpaste, and limiting sugar intake can help prevent tooth decay and maintain long-term oral health.
